Help deciding on resin printer as of 2026

I have 4 printed all elegoo and I am looking to move away from them. My Mars 5 ultra had for a year is still going strong, I do actually love this printer, but had issues with the Saturn's. My Saturn 4 has never printed great is super hit and miss. The two saturn 16k print much much better but one I had to replace the heat transfer unit and one the screen. Both were covered in warrenty ad machines were only 4 months old but god it was a pain and I never want to do it again.

Would I be making a mistake buying this 2nd hand Elegoo Mars 5 Ultra as a first printer ($100AUD)? Description: 'Still turns on/works. Resin spill has leaked into the machine. Strong resin smell constantly from the machine.' I can store it outside or in garage.

It might make sense for you to get the basics down. but expect that thing to die and get a new one. youre gonna make some mistakes at first, might aswell ruin a worthless machine... had a spill myself. macine still worked fine a couple of months, but soon zaxis motor broje from strain or overheat

Mars 5 Ultra or Saturn 4?

the mars 5 ultra is a great starter/beginner printer. the mars 5 ultra is a great starter/beginner printer. overwhelmingly. the "auto level" build plate and drop vat features eliminate 2 huge pain points for resin printing (essentially the black hole of unknowable trouble shooting if either of those two factors ever are an issue...these types of posts are fairly common, and every time i see one, i'm glad i got the mars 5 ultra) if you're printing minis it's excellent. without crowding the plate... i can get 6ish 32mm size minis on the build plate. larger ...like 60mm base size. or a mech/larger print, often is done in 2 plates. (i don't like to crowd the build plate) I have printed a couple medium size units of the 40k type mecha. like a newer style dreadnaught, and larger vehicle print. normally those were over 3-4 plates. I have mainly been playing Trench crusade in the year since i got the printer. I've printed 2ish large monster/demon models for a game mode that requires a large marquee "boss" fight. bigger than ... i dunno a dnd beholder type "large" model like a 100-150mm base size type monster. have had no issues with fidelity/detail printing. and from never having used a resin 3D printer. have had extremely little to no failed prints (like my first 3 prints was using pre-supported models, and one "arm" kept failing over and over again. i chalk that up to a badly supported sculpt. have only ever had one like ...print didn't stick to the plate fail) the only drawback to the mars 5 is the build plate size. it is what it is/smaller sized. If you're upgrading to the saturn 4 ultra. that maintains the auto/level--drop vat. But the older stock saturn 4. without those features. eh. I think you're giving up a ton of convenience for bigger print bed. so... it basically depends on how big a thing you routinely think you'll print. I know i'm not regularly printing large prints. and the small size of the mars 5 has never been an issue. You could possibly download chitubox, input the base settings for mars 5 ultra/saturn 4. and see the build dimension, if you have STLs in mind. but as someone who's had a 3D resin printer for about a year. you go through cycles of needing/wanting to print things. new game, or new project. you'll print tons of things ...but then might go months without really needing anything. I'm not a big fan of printing bullshit just to make plastic garbage.
