Privacy with Creality products

Creality is somewhat loathe with actually releasing source code of much of the open source stack they're using, and the originally open source part is essentially all of it . But my V3 KE (can't speak to newer printers, although the K1 should be included) is easy to root and get a Linux shell on and fiddle with, and the printer itself can thankfully print without an internet connection or any proprietary transports, more so if you install Mainsail or Fluidd after rooting: https://github.com/Guilouz/Creality-Helper-Script is an important resource and very convenient for the KE and K1 and other models, although I don't think it's being developed any longer. Enjoy it while it lasts, since several US states are proposing California-style bills to ban open source firmware from printers in order to enforce "gun printing checks"!

Are Creality printers really rubbish?

If you don’t mind like $100 more and the rough 35mm drop on all axis, I would recommend the Bambu P2S combo over this. Much more reliable, multicolor ready, A1 style hot swap nozzles, Still runs most of your “larger prints” and will only have a small gap in coverage before even the k1 has to break really large prints into sections. However if you really want the “tinker with your printer as much as you can dream of” type experience, Bambu is a bit locked since they removed open source.

Resurrection of my QIDI Plus 4

The creator praises his heavily modified Creality K1 for its extremely fast bed meshing (15 seconds for 255 points) and its modifiability, contrasting it favorably with the Qidi Tech Plus 4. Are Creality printers really rubbish?

I have K1s and K2s running close to 90% capacity. They average 18-19 hours a day, 7 days a week. The K1s are rock solid now that they have the unicorn nozzles. Only regular maintenance issues above normal consumables are cpu fans every 1,500-2,000 hours..oldest K2 is too new (<1k hours) for me to have a good feel yet. But zero issues to date. I have an Anycubic S1 Kobra but it is not dependable enough, and when it has issues, the mean time to repair is too long. I’ve chucked the two Bambu printers I’ve had within six months of owning them.
