Oh god yes. Try using BambuStudio without a WiFi connection and you will want to really break something.
I hate it, that there is no USB on the A1 Mini. It's so annoying not to be able to directly connect the printer to the PC. For me one of the biggest issues and really made me consider buying a printer from another company, when I upgrade in the future.
And regarding the walls around the garden. Most of the time I just upgrade my printer to the newest firmware without really reading what changed - i know, stupid. However, I had an issue, so I wanted to check if it may be caused by the newest firmware update and the sketchy descriptions regarding changes with every update and how they "improved the safety of the printer" without further explanationy to what they mean, really weirds me out.

Why there are only few mini printers in the market?
I think, historically, 3d printers were very fiddly machines. The Prusa and the A1 mini standout as not only very small machines, but very reliable and easy to use. They are uniquely suited to being first-time 3d printers for people who are curious.
I think the Ender 3 and similar printers introduced a lot of curious new users to 3d printing, but those were techy hobbyists who could stand to do some of the fiddling and troubleshooting. I think the A1 Mini the intro machine for an entirely new generation of new users who are more interested in "printing 3d models" than they are in "3d printing" (note: these are not the same things!).
Bambulab and Prusa represent the tip-of-the-spear in the user-friendliness department, which is why there's a good market for their mini printers. If, let's say, Anycubic were to make a mini-printer, it had better be dirt-friggin-cheap to make any sales, because they don't have the reputation and software ecosystem to fall back on as customer draws. My guess is that it doesn't actually cost that much less to make a mini-printer than to make a full size printer (same electronics, same extruder/head, same number of axes/motors/controllers, all you save is on heated built plate size and raw material for physcially smaller device). So, for a company like Anycubic, you'd do better to make a full-size model for about the same price, sell it for about the same price + markup, and then compete on build volume and other specs. For instance, you can get a 250x250 (anycubic) Kobra X for about the same price as a 180x180 (bambulab) A1 mini. Value goes up even more when you consider the multicolor printing of the Kobra X.

I have more than 10 printers, and all the prototyping is done on A1 minis - small, cheap, joy to use.
Enclosed printers are more complex and there isn't a one size fits all solution. For most people - passive enclosure does nothing (maybe keeps dust, hands, and paws off moving parts). For engineering filaments - you want a heated chamber (that gives like 50%+ boost to layer adhesion strength for most common ABS and ASA). My choice would be either QIDI Q2 (open ecosystem, big) or X2D (Bambu ecosystem - easy and toy-like, and has great engineering potential). Would probably skip the whole P-series.
For the first printer - A1 is a great choice. It handles 95% of models you can come up with, super easy to use, and there isn't much the can go wrong (I'd also skip on the Combo). And if he really likes it - then it will be clear what direction he wants - heated chamber, multi-head, large print area, etc. or if he likes it at all. I would go for a new printer, especially for a gift
